History

Engineering Built to Last.

Since 1983, MKM has helped bring thoughtful, resilient structures to life across Sonoma County and beyond. Our work is rooted in collaboration, technical precision, and a commitment to supporting projects that serve their communities for generations.

1983

MKM Opens Its First Office
MKM & Associates opened its doors in 1983 as a small structural engineering office with five employees. From the beginning, the firm focused on practical engineering, responsive service, and strong relationships with architects, builders, and local clients.

Late 1980s

Building A Local Reputation
Through steady project work across Sonoma County and the North Bay, MKM began earning a reputation for clear communication, reliable structural solutions, and a hands-on approach to engineering. Early residential, commercial, and renovation projects helped establish the foundation for long-term growth.

1990s

Expanding Project Types
As the firm grew, MKM expanded its portfolio beyond residential work into civic, commercial, hospitality, winery, education, and mixed-use projects. This period helped shape the firm’s ability to adapt structural systems to a wide range of building types and client needs.

Late 1990s

Strengthening Technical Expertise
MKM continued to develop deeper expertise in seismic design, complex foundations, wood framing, steel, concrete, masonry, and structural retrofit work. As project demands became more technical, the firm’s reputation for thoughtful problem-solving continued to grow.

Early 2000s

Integrating Design and Construction Knowledge
With more complex projects underway, MKM strengthened its practical understanding of how engineering decisions translate into the field. This construction-minded approach became a defining part of the firm’s work, helping project teams move from concept through construction with greater clarity.
